HISTORY OF SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT AND BALANCING, INC.

URBANDALE, IOWA

DECEMBER 2004

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. was originally incorporated in 1967 by Einar Dahl, Jr. and headquartered in a 180 square foot office in the old AIB building at 10th and Grand.

The mission of the company was to provide an independent, objective and professional test of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. Included in these tests are air and water balance, sound and vibration measurements, building surveys, control verification, fume hood testing, duct leakage testing, cooling tower performance testing and system commissioning.

The young company was purchased by Dean Jukam in February of 1970.

Dean graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. Prior to purchasing Systems Management & Balancing, Inc., Dean was a Trane sales engineer in the Des Moines office for six years.

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. became certified by the Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) as an independent testing agency in the fall of 1970. Today, all eligible technicians have been tested and certified by AABC. In addition, three employees are certified Test and Balance Engineers (TBE) and two are certified Commissioning Agents (CCA).

Wayne Tischhauser came to work with Dean the summer of 1971. This marked the beginning of an exceptional friendship and working relationship. Wayne was a major factor in the success of the company.

The first major project to be tested in the summer of 1970 was the new post office building at Second and University. Following is a list of some projects completed throughout the years:

One such test of interest was a cooling tower performance test at the site of the manned space shuttle launch pad, Cape Kennedy, Florida.

The Minneapolis branch office was sold in 2000 to a long time employee.

On October 1, 2002, James E. Hall purchased Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. from Dean. Wayne retired in April, 2004. Dean and Don Kleinschmit, who joined Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. in 1992, continue to work with Jim in the day-to-day operations of the company.

Today, Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. has seven graduate engineers on staff and technicians located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Omaha. In 35 short years, the company has advanced from 180 square feet, Alnor velometers, squeeze bulbs, oil filled manometers and pneumatic controls to 3,000 square feet in Urbandale, utilizing state of the art computers and instrumentation and testing sophisticated systems.
